Snow Soccer

21 December 2010 by the Minette

Given that most of the nation was covered with the white fluffy stuff and we are looking towards a White Christmas, today I only have fun in the snow!  If you're lucky enough to live in the South (boy, I never thought I would be remiss it!) or you do not have snow, don't let that keep you from capturing a bullet and heading out with your dog!

Take a big ball, basketball, soccer ball or even an indestructible ball can be used.  J'aime indestructible balls because they cannot be easily picked up so they are more challenging, but they are hard as they bang on legs of your dog!  So if you have an older dog, I recommend something sweeter!

Catch the ball and head outside, see if you can keep it away from your dog by kicking, fieldwork and through her legs!  If you have a smaller dog, I have him seconds to gain on you.  Propose a goal line and have fun together!  Careful not to injure each other, but get out there and burn some of those holiday cookie off calories as you feel like a kid in new and bond with your dog!

It's a great game for children and dogs as long both are respectful of each other and the supervision of an adult!

Teaching your dog two targets

December 20th, 2010 by Minette Learning to Target the Hand

I love to teach my dogs to target.  This trick/skill is useful in many facets throughout my dog's lives.  Targeting can also be built upon to teach other skills and more intricate skills, it is a building block to good obedience!

What You Will Need

Getting Started

I like teaching this command with very few distractions so find a secluded areaAt first I like to teach my dog to target gold "touch" my handPut treats in one hand or in a treat bag or your pocketWith the opposite hand, open it wide with your fingers to the side and put it in front of your dog's faceWhen your dog his nose to hand your keys or sniffs at your palm, click and treatContinue opening and closing your hand, click and treat when your dog makes contact with your handKeep doing this until your dog knows what he has to do to get you to click, now you may add the command "touch" next hold your hand higher up, over to the left, the right or behind your backYour dog should follow your palm wherever it is and touch it with his nose on command. If at first he has trouble understanding when you move your hand go back a step and be patient.Once your dog's confidence is built and he understands the command you can have him repeat the behavior a few times before clicking and treating, then you can enter off the clicker. Teaching Your Dog to Target Your Hand Can Help Him Gain Confidence and Approach Things in His Environment

This behavior can be used to help fearful dogs feel more confident in their environment, it also builds a foundation for retrieving for delivering items to a specific area, it can be used for a competition send away, and even in agility.

I have a nervous dog, who is often afraid of things that he does not recognize.  I can use the "touch" command and my hand to get him closer and closer to objects he would not normally approach.  When my hand is on the object it gives him confidence to approach it because he trusts me.  It is also an easy way to get his focus back on me when he is exhibiting apprehension!

Co-Habitating with a cattle dog?

My Brood rearing

Children from 3 to 3 dogs I have loaded on the truck and 8 hours headed home.  My more young, a Dutch Shepherd is 8 months old and I watched her jump in the back seat of the front seat with dilated eyes and open wide.  With intensity, she began to look intently at cars approaching and with passion, she turned back and their ogled as they disappeared in the distance.

I am a professional dog trainer for more than 20 years, and I knew what was going on in his pea brain.  His instincts of herds have been becoming over stimulated by watching the cars pass.

Living with a dog herds can be a bit of a challenge.  Firstly, I noticed the instinct of herds dysfunction on the day of Thanksgiving that I watched on TV Eukanuba dog show and she began to pace to do what that looked like a dancing rain in my living room.  Firstly, even if it is true that I know better, I thought it was a little funny.  But with time it has further increased control and humour dissipated as I contemplated TV crush on her head as she jumped toward it.

I have 3 dogs of breeding, 2 Belgian Malinois Belgian and my new Dutch Shepherd and two races are known for their enthusiasm and their difficulty to train and manage.  This is why I like them, they represent a challenge for my doggies skills finely softened.

But I think one of the things that distinguishes me as a trainer is that I understand how they think and process information.  For my little girl, precisely named "Fury", it stood in the privacy of his own House when it was invaded by the other dogs.   Not only they come into his house, but they discerned his pleadings to play.  Playfulness then turned to anger, a lack of understanding and total frustration.

It is not as if I had never watched TV programmes related pet until Thanksgiving, but starts at 7 months my pups around type behavior more adult increases probably for several months until it is over a year and a half to two years.

Understanding is the first issue of the company.  Why it's suddenly display behavior naughty?

Firstly, we have been discussing is his age.  It is towards sexual maturity and is accompanied by changes in behaviour.  Even dogs sterilized and neutered has always go through these changes, although to a lesser extent.Second, and perhaps the factor most important, is that I'm fails its exercise and mental needs.  I spent the eve of Thanksgiving and prepare the next day in the morning.  If she had tired, had been satisfied their needs; the chances of her noting television and take care of what is going on would have been much less!Thirdly, it is a dog of herd!  And as she has instincts that have been developed and raised to be improved for my enjoyment of hundreds of years.  As the owner of a dog of herd, I need me familiarize themselves with the characteristics of the category of the dog and his race individually. Herding dogs are known for their strength and ability, even necessary, to work all day

Breeding dogs:

Livestock behavior is modified instincts predator hunt and prey on other animals.  By reproduction selective man was capable of inhibiting the dogs will of the kill while maintaining and controlling the ability to hunt and herd.

Breeding dogs are also known for their ability to guard to protect their herds so their vision and hearing is exemplary, and they are often very noisy.

Because of their beauty, intelligence and size, breeding dogs are often chosen pet family; However, they need to be physically active and mentally challenged to be successful for pets.

Instincts Don't go away, and if their needs are not met they may appear in inappropriate places.  They often can pin their people (including children) heels to "herd".  They can vocalize any Visual change in their environment (someone leaves the toilet seat up instead of his usual position) or all sounds they know.

Sometimes this during stimulation of instinctive behaviour, if not treated, can completely out of control and is becoming increasingly difficult to treat and repair.

I've sometimes seen the dogs who instincts completely dysfunction and can quickly lead to a serious assault.

As the owner of dogs often used in police and secret service field, I also understand with my dogs, capabilities and ability to become more protective both dogs and people they do not know.  Their herd instincts are often directed to bite people on command, so I do understand this power.

Fortunately, because I am a trainer and I know and love dogs husbandry I already started his instincts to use casting and we are often working on obedience.

When it appear like a gopher in the truck and began hunting for cars start mentally giving the "stink eye" too, I could command him fix which inhibits the ability to see outside.  If she could look out the window normally could have this privilege, but as soon as his attitude changed that she lost the privilege and had to adhere to obedience.

I love his instincts to meet my own needs of sculpture and to give added momentum and enthusiasm when we later attend obedience trials.  The important is that I understand it, I know what it has been cultivated and I understand what it wants and what she thinks most of the time.  And, I know when his behavior breaks down, it is probably because I'm not stimulate her mentally and physically that she needs!

You have a breeding dog?  Breeding dogs are natural athletes after you've mastered obedience, try a class of agility or teach your dog to use his instincts in a livestock or class tracking!  But more than just fun together spend quality time!

Your dog may need a class or an outlet for all this energy and intelligence!

More targeting

24 December 2010 by Minette targeting Fun more!

We hope that you have been able to get your dog to target your palm.  If it is able to track your palm, wherever he goes touch with his nose, he is ready to target other objects.

What You Will Need

TreatsClickerA long object; Goujon, sticks, plastic pen or the end of a lid of a kitchen utensilThe containing

To get started

Your dog already knows the bases hit, now we teach him to demonstrate this behavior with other objects.

First, let me begin with a pen or an object of type long stick. Targeting helps you to reach more polished AgilityHold the pen out of his faceWhen he moves towards or key, click and treatIf it does not touch, move more closely or in a different position until doesBecause, he did it with your hand should quicklyAs pretty moving, he begins to understand move pen up, down and left and right to ensure it is consecrated. If he puts his mouth on it, you can click on and treat or click and jackpot, this Foundation for extraction!   If this is the direction that you want to go to keep clicking on and treatment when he puts his mouth on it. (Details on this type of capture later)You can now take the stick or the pen or other objects and place them and touching. Then, I'd like to teach my dog to touch with Tupperware lids (you can even draw a target on it).Start just as you did with your hand and pen brandishing the lid in front of him. When your dog nose touches the target click and treatContinue, moving target all around, your dog should easily follow. Then put the target on the ground and give the command "touch" or target. This can be a little more difficult, because he has always taken to target things in your hand, but be patient. If it moves the target, click on treatIf, it affects the click target and the JACKPOT!Continue until the behavior is reliable, then move the plu target awayClick treatment for an appropriate responseYou can then move the target farther and farther with successful trainingYou can also try sticking it up on the wall and have him touch with its nose Mr. Snitch opening the door as a Service dog

The sky is the limit with this command.  As a dog trainer, this was one of first and favorite behaviors my dog directory.  This behavior I could teach my dog to retrieve, to turn on lights, push the disabled buttons with their noses agility of Polish and many other useful behaviors!

Don't forget that trick training has two cardinal rules: always be patient (if you need to save a step or two until your dog catches) and have fun!  Learning new behaviors and spend time with you is a dream for your dog, he likes the feeling like he has a job and it is necessary!
